Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
