In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
